MeganW
I have one kid who wants to learn computer programming. Anybody know of an app or program or game that might work toward that goal? This kid is 9 1/2 years old. He is very advanced for math, but has NOT had much computer experience. THANKS!
bluedarling
I've taught computer programming to a child that age with the Homeschool Programming Kidcoder material, but she had already done a lot in Scratch. I would try that first if he hasn't done it yet.
wapiti
Another vote for Scratch for that age!
lazzaroni
We have done code monster which is ok. Lightbot was fun for my 9 yo. Khan Academy also has some good choices.

LAinVA
My daughter (10) is finishing up a Minecraft Mod computer programming course offered by Youth Digital using JAVA. She has thoroughly enjoyed it and learned a lot. They have other things like making your own app or creating a 3d game.

kateingr
Code.org has awesome self-paced, free courses that introduce the basics. My seven year old is loving it, and learning a lot.
Writerdaddy
My 10yr old is starting mine craft mod programming in java with youth digital. so far the instruction and tech interface for the class is EXCELLENT. You couldn't imagine a better job for an online class. They really understand the mind of a child, plus have an interactive interface that is great. I have noticed however that if I don't supervise my boy flies through the material just trying to copy the bare minimum to get the sword working or whatever and doesn't really get the concepts.
