Harriet Vane
If a student's handwriting is atrocious, are they allowed to write every other line? (Skipping a line each time, leaving a blank line in between lines of text.) Or would that be marked down? My thought is that the extra white space on the page would help the reader decipher the chicken scratch. Any other strategies?
Gwen in VA
Since my ds1 has handwriting that is completely undecipherable, I wondered the same thing. He took several AP exams as well as the SAT, and somehow the graders all gave him a score that was sort of what we expected / hoped for. I think that the graders are just REALLY good at reading the impossible -- or making up what they want to based on what they can read! Harriet Vane
That's encouraging. Anyone else have more specific feedback? I have a student to advise and want to make sure I am accurate.
Teachin'Mine
No experience, but unless one line is really overlapping with next, I wouldn't skip spaces as that, to me, might create a more elementary look to the essay. It might also appear as if the student is trying to make their work appear lengthier than it is. Just my opinion. i can imagine some readers needing to pass an essay to be assigned to a different reader if they are unable to decipher the writing. I'd worry more about content than penmanship. MysteryJen
Ds1's writing is terrible (genetic, it looks exactly like his father's), but his essay for the SAT was graded fairly, I thought. I wouldn't worry about the handwriting, I bet it is not the worst the graders have ever seen.
