Renthead Mommy
My 12 yo, 7th grader is finally willing to try Khan Academy. He is not what you would call an eager student. I am hoping this sticks. But I don't know where to start him. And because he was never interested, I never really checked it out so I'm not quite sure I understand how it works yet, and of course he's ready to go now, now, now. He is 7th grade, but we just started Singapore 6A. He has read and worked through Life of Fred "Decimals" and "Percents and Fractions." He has always picked up the concepts in math quickly. However he has always refused to memorize his facts so has struggled greatly in the past. He finally has all his facts down and memorized and doesn't have to work them out any longer (thank god!) With that info, where would you start him? 6th grade? 7th grade? Foundations Arithmetic? Foundations Pre-Algebra?
OneStepAtATime
Since he is normally reluctant why not start him a bit below where you think his ability level is so as to boost his confidence and help him to get engaged quickly. The site, I believe, will track what he is doing well and move him past it while reviewing what he may struggle a bit with or need review on. Hopefully someone with more experience will post, too, though. We have not used it that much yet.
