nature girl
I'm not planning on doing formal history with my DD this year, it just doesn't seem necessary, maybe not even for 1st grade. Other than science books she's just not a fan of non-fiction, and (shameful secret) I find history a little boring. But I'd like her to learn a little bit of American history this year, as much as possible through fiction set in various time periods, or nf books that read like fiction... I'm thinking of books along the lines of the Little House series to teach a bit about pioneer life. Can any of you recommend other books that would spark a young story-lover's interest? If you have fun suggestions for prehistory, I'd love to hear those as well. :)
Ellie
Here are a few to get you going: Sarah Plain and Tall George Washington by the d'Aulaires George Washington's Breakfast, by Jean Fritz (in fact, all of her books) Ben and Me, by Robert Lawson Mr. Revere and I, also by Robert Lawson America's Paul Revere, by Esther Forbes Blue Willow Caddie Woodlawn Carry On, Mr. Bowditch Daniel Boone, and other biographies by James Dougherty George Washington's World, and others by Genevieve Foster Johnny Tremain I have to say that we *love* history in our family. One of the ways I encouraged that was by reading books like the ones above, and by doing as many field trips as possible. We were suckers for "Living History Days," lol.
