KarenNC
I know we have some folks who are in Britain or are familiar with British slang. Is "bathmat" a term for a negligee or similar piece of lingerie, or was it in the 1980s?
horsellian
Not currently AFAIK! (I can't comment on the 1980s - I was too little to be aware of that sort of thing.) I've only ever heard bathmat used to refer to a bathmat, to go on the bathroom floor.
StephanieF
Me too, Bathmat goes on the floor and did in the 1980s too! Stephanie
Laura Corin
Not that I know of. It's a mat that goes on the bathroom floor. L
KarenNC
That's all I can find as well, thanks for confirming.. There's a play we're working on and the director says that when it calls for "bathmat" it's actually British vernacular for a negligee. In the context of the play, either item would be funny as used, but my bet is that somewhere along the line (not necessarily this director, as it's an old play), someone changed the bathmat to a negligee in a staging because they liked it better (or had a negligee and not a bathmat handy ;) ), and explained it away as "British vernacular." :) It's not a big deal, as it all comes down to the director's vision anyway, it just aggravated me that I couldn't find anything showing that usage.
