mmasc
Well, I've posted before about first grade phonics but here's another one. :) My son is finishing up K and about to turn six. We are working our way through MP First Start Reading. He's doing well, but seems bored by the reading in the First Start books (black and white, numbered sentences, no pictures). So I got the first two sets of I See Sam readers when they were free a few weeks ago. He seems to like them better. My question is where to go from here. Should I: Continue with First Start and just try to supplement with the Sam readers? Drop First Start and just focus going through the Sam readers? (And buy at least the third set also) He's not ready for MP Storytime Treasures. I have AAS 1-3, but I don't think he's ready for that yet either. Should I invest my money in the third set of Sam readers and work our way through them consistently? Do I need a workbook to supplement these concepts? I've looked at MCP Plaid Phonics and McRuffy. Thoughts on that? I know we need to just focus on reading but it's hard for me to not feel like we need a workbook. I feel like I have a million phonics items, but no real PLAN. For example, I have MP's Classical Phonics, but no real plan on how to use it. I'm probably over complicating this, but I don't want to mess up reading! I like the idea of using AAS and probably WWE, but I feel like these might be a mid-year addition, not right now. Thanks for reading my insecure ramblings! And please help. :)
Seeker of Schole
When my daughter hit that point in FSR, I started using a combination of Explode the Code and the Classical Phonics books to target skills, and the readers (Soft and White, etc) for practice.
