PSA: Self cleaning ovens

Clean up sugary spills on the bottom of your oven before running the self clean cycle. If you don't those spills can etch the enamel.

Some manuals may mention this, mine didn't.

Ah well, from my research it seems the self clean function can ruin a range after some time anyway so maybe it's not horrible that I can't use it ever again.

My next range will be a used, $50, 30 year old electric coil range that takes house fuses and has no fancy features.

Hot sugar is really insanely hot. Doesn't totally surprise me. I once completely annihilated an expensive food processor with hot sugar.

I think it's the acidic properties it has that really cause the damage. I have a few little pits on my glass top that are probably due to sugar as well.

I hate my range.

I once bought a glass top.  I was not happy with it either.  I ended up selling it to my former landlord (I bought my own stove when we lived there because the one she provided was really sucky).  When I moved I had gas (which I love better) so I didn't take the stove with me.  I will never buy one like that again.  You'd think cleaning those things would be easy because it's this smooth flat top.  Nope.  It was actually harder to clean!

harder to clean and it only has two settings--- water won't boil and everything boils over

hated that stove--- when it finally died I bought a 25yo stove with coils and I am super happy (I'd be happier with gas but that is another story)
