sdobis
I haven't seen a recent hits and misses post, so here it is. Most are probably 2 months or so into their year. How's it going? Hits- Life of Fred-love it!! MEP math- perfect mix with LOF Xtramath-perfect for review of facts Mystery of History-first time using a timeline book. Liking the ease. CLE Algebra-I wish it went beyond algebra in its sunrise edition Education Portal-online videos that we use for Literature and Biology review Notgrass Exploring America-love it all! Misses- Rod & Staff math-too much drill and kill that my right brained daughter hates. Rod & Staff reading- only the workbooks were a miss. My daughter still reads the readers. CTGE-It looks really good, but my daughter isn't ready for it yet. Doing the job- Rod & Staff spelling Spelling City Mr. Q life science DIVE Biology

...................
Well the other post doesn't have misses, so I will bite.... Misses: 1. Calvert Math - Kids loved the first three chapters and then that happy little world started melting as the review was either non existent, for days at a time, or overwhelming- pages and pages and pages of review. It was just too spotty. 2. Saxon Math- I have a love hate relationship with Saxon. It's so easy to use and I do love the explanations. But the incremental approach and review of years-old material was making my son absolutely hate math. I feel a really big math frustration this year, but I think we are going to pull through....I did put my dd back in her perfect math and she is doing wonderfully. She is happy, and learning well and moving along. ......Right now my son is giving Prentice Hall Middle grades math Course 1 a go. So far, we really like it!! It has good explanations, plenty, plenty of practice, a few challenging word prob;ems every day, and it has a little bit of color. It focuses on related topics for a whole chapter (gasp!) and includes Mixed Review in every lesson as well as a chapter Review and Test at the end of every chapter. It is now sold at CBD and Rainbow for an affordable price. AND it includes a workbook for those kids who don't like copying problems AS WELL AS a video for EVERY lesson. I can't really complain. We will also be trying out AOPS when it comes in the mail.
Susie in MS
Our biggest hit is Ambleside Online Y2: ~~Our Island Story (google books) ~~Child's Story of the World ~~Trial and Triumph ~~Little Duke (google books) ~~Shakespeare ~~Parables of Nature (google books) ~~Pilgrim' Progress (download broke down over 1-2 years) ~~Burgess Animal Book ~~Tree in the Trail (also Seabird) ~~ CM and Long Geography books (google books) ~~We rearranged the Lit a bit and are doing Robin Hood first since we read Understood Betsy and Wind in the Willows. Rod and Staff math continues to be our main math despite boredom. It just gets the job done and doesn't pressure the child to move too fast. Wheeler Elementry Speller (from google books) Grammarland (google books) We also like parts of Bigger Hearts for His Glory. And still row FIAR when we can. I can't think of any misses so far this year.

Guest
JrK/K: AAR- the fluency pages did her in. And for the price, I expected better quality paper in the readers. Newsprint? Really? For 4/5 year olds? OPGTR ETC McRuffy K LA, Hand, Math BJU K Math- too simple for DD. I should have bought 1st. 2nd Grade Misses: SOTW WWE 1 and 2 FLL 2 and 3 SWO MCT Island CLE Math- spiral really is not our thing BJU: everything for 2nd grade Singapore Math- just not our style OPGTR -they did not need the review like I thought they did SRA Phonics 3 -same reason as above AAS SWO-no learning at. all. COAH: World Geog- I could just not pull this one together ES Bio: notebook and lapbooks -too young for my guys Apologia Science COAH: Artist Study- same fate as World Geog Older Kids' Misses: Worldly Wise-utter waste of time Getting Started With Latin- It woke up a desire for more. That is about all I can say for it. Saxon Math- Just say no to spiral is the mantra here Teaching Textbooks Hake Gram/Writ Writing Skills BJU Eng 7- In their defense, it assumes the child has 5 years {2nd-6th} of BJU Eng experience. VFCR Apologia Science LOE: Essentials I listed our hits on the other thread. Really, for us this list is short for this year. I guess I am running out of new things to try out.
