Wildcat
I posted this on the Chat Board, and it was suggested I cross post it here. I read an interesting article about how the lack of free play affects kids. I know nothing about the site other than it seems to be a serious site. It is sort of long, but a fast read. In the interest of full disclosure, the author does mention his book, but I still think the article has merit. http://www.aeonmagazine.com/being-human/children-today-are-suffering-a-severe-deficit-of-play/
KathyJo
I've only skimmed it a little, but so far, very interesting.
8filltheheart
I haven't read the article, not enough time today but I will read it later. I wonder if the reason it was suggested to post it on this forum is b/c there was just a rather long discussion on the value of play as learning and cognitive development vs. directed play/exploration. http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/404265-2-hours-homeschooling-equals-a-whole-day-of-public-schooling/ These are core issues in how I parent and teach, but I am "talked" out. ;)
MASHomeschooler
Another difference here and now (versus in hunter-gatherer societies) is that kids mostly don't get to observe a lot of the adults' work, so they don't know what skills that need to "practice." I do agree that kids need more free-play time than most get, for the reasons they stated and more.
