BJU Fundamentals of Math (7th grade), Dolciani Prealgebra, AoPS Prealgebra

Recommended Posts

I thought I was set on Dolciani, but I took a look at a friend's BJU Math 7 and I am very impressed with the thorough and clear presentation. I also have AoPS Prealgebra. We are done with Singapore 6A and will continue to finish 6B. I am torn which one to go with. Can you please help me to choose? Tell me why you would choose BJU and if you will continue with it.

We liked Dolciani: solid, clear, good number of problems. Ds used it alone. However, he found it pretty dull, so we are switching to Tablet Class Pre A for next semester to review and solidify, and then switch to Tablet Class Algebra.

Eta: don't know much about bju but here are some threads:

We use an older edition of BJU Fundamentals for 6th or 7th grade depending on the student's math ability.  We also use BJU PreAlgebra, but I haven't used their math for high school.

I use 2 different tracks for high school math depending on my student's math ability and interest.  My non-mathy children have used MUS,  and then we switched to what is now called YourTeacher, but the website is  http://www.mathhelp.com/ (and a free summer introduction is available through http://www.homeschoolbuyersco-op.org/ ).  My more mathy children have used Foerster's Algebra 1 and 2 and also his PreCalculus and Calculus programs.  (Geometry is still hit and miss as far as a good program.)

Unless your student needs more practice with arithmetic, I would think BJU Fundamentals would be too easy after doing Singapore, but if you want a program to solidify all the fundamentals, then it is a great program. :)

I agree with Michele. i have my older two using BJU Fund. now and it is a good solid review. Mine needed that review because of many gapping holes in math. If your child deosn't need that kind of review, just skip along to Pre-Alg. You can find the scope and sequence for BJU below. It is a free download.

We are planning on using BJU DL for the long term because I do not have the time to teach it directly.
