theYoungerMrsWarde
I chose "Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer's Day?" (18) to memorize in Shakespeare English class sr. year of high school. As part of it we had to not just be able to recite it to the class, but also write it out with perfect spelling and punctuation. I think it stuck much longer because of that second part. ETA: And here's David Tennat (the 10th Doctor) reciting it in his original Scottish accent! http://pinterest.com/pin/258675572317802534/
JessReplanted
Sonnet 116 Let me not to the marriage of true mindsAdmit impediments. Love is not loveWhich alters when it alteration finds,Or bends with the remover to remove:O no! It is an ever-fixèd markThat looks on tempests and is never shaken; It is the star to every wandering bark,Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeksWithin his bending sickle's compass come:Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,But bears it out even to the edge of doom.If this be error and upon me proved,I never writ, nor no man ever loved.[1] *This is my favorite. My kids have not gotten to Shakespeare yet.
Entropymama
130! My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun;Coral is far more red than her lips' red;If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.I have seen roses damask'd, red and white,But no such roses see I in her cheeks; And in some perfumes is there more delightThan in the breath that from my mistress reeks.I love to hear her speak, yet well I knowThat music hath a far more pleasing sound;I grant I never saw a goddess go;My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground: And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare As any she belied with false compare. Here's Catherine Tate reciting it (at the end)

helena
Catherine Tate is so funny! I'm starting to realize I've made a mistake, not adding Shakespeare to our poetry memory work. I have one going into high school, that gives my 4 years... Haha! Nothing like (premature) failure panic to make things happen. :willy_nilly:
