Free
I have spent the past several hours on Amazon looking for middle school level books on an overview of Animal anatomy and physiology and have been able to turn up only three interesting resources: DK Animal Life DK How Animals Work How Bodies Work: Animal Physiology The DK books are gorgeous and I will probably buy the first one that I have listed. That said, I would like some more options to choose from. Since my library does not hold good science books, I will have to end up buying. For this reason, I am looking for one or two solid resources that will cover all the major body systems in animals (not humans) and preferably even compare the anatomy of different animals to point out the similarities and differences. Does anybody have any ideas for such a resource? Textbook/ Videos/ Websites ideas also welcome, of course.
Arcadia
I would go for a high school zoology textbook from a used bookstore. They are doable at middle school level. 4H also have guides to animal anatomy especially bunnies, chickens and horses put out on their website for free downloads. I like the zoology coloring book too, not sure if it is middle or high school level. I read through the book at Barnes and Noble. http://www.amazon.co...edir_mdp_mobile ETA: For rabbit (gross photos so you might want to pre-read) http://ehs.uc.edu/lams/data/pdfs/9003.pdf For horses (all not gross) 4H http://www1.agric.gov.ab.ca/$department/deptdocs.nsf/all/4h7933/$file/g_partsofhorse.pdf American Quarter Horse http://www.juniormasterhorseman.com/pdf/Anatomy.pdf Carolina Pony Club anatomy and physiology of a horse http://carolina.ponyclub.org/Horse%20Info/Anatomy%20and%20Physiology.pdf
Free
Thanks so much for pulling up these links Arcadia. So, yesterday I found this thread http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/253045-cpo-life-science/ and found that the CPO Life science book has a very nice section on animal structure and function. Plus, I found this site Shape of Life, which has a collection of videos on various animals from the simplest to the most complex. At this time these two resources seem to fit the bill. freerange
My first stop would be to the Jake's Bones website. There's a series of 3D books called Uncover a ....(Frog, Tiger, Shark, etc) which details the different bodily systems. DD was particularly keen on hamsters, so we included studying the Hamster Encyclopedia and added on info I found online about relative organ sizes, heart rates, etc. You might also want to take a look at The Brain Scoop on youtube, which includes dissections, so preview if you think it might be a problem. fourcatmom
I have spent a lot of time researching this idea over the past few months, here is what I found. I was looking for specifically Mammal Anatomy. There is a book called Mammal Anatomy which you can find on Amazon but it just shows up out of stock. If you click on this link, it will take you to the publishers website, however I have been told that they are not in business any longer. I was bound and determined to find this book, I thought it was perfect for what I was looking for. You can also click on the sample on the website to see what it covers. I did finally find the book through a local representative. If you are interested just click on the publishing tab at the top and then the first bar, finding a local rep. Check your state and see if you can find someone near you who might have the book. I found a rep about 20 min away and she sold me her new copy for $8. This book is listed on Amazon for $99. You can also see this thread...Animal Science/Anatomy/Zoology Hopefully some of that will help. Good luck!

This looks perfect and just like what I am looking for, though I don't necessarily want to restrict us to mammals. I will try to find a copy of this. Thanks!
