Mandylubug
So, my kids are artsy and love to make things, cut and paste, draw with pencils, color, make bead necklaces, etc... they all four want to do some canvas painting and I don't know where to start other than go to Michael's and buy the supplies. Any books that you can recommend would be appreciated. Would you just buy a canvas for each child, let them paint what they wish and then let them paint over it later (recommended by a local "artist" friend) I suppose I am trying to decide from "free painting" or from a structured lesson of some sort. eta: I don't want to pay for art lessons. I just want this to be fun and at home. I can afford more supplies vs paying for one visit to a local studio.
three4me
I know you're looking for a book that teaches painting, but a friend of mine bought this book, along with a canvas and paints (you could each have a canvas if you wanted) and followed how the garden in the book was painted. It wouldn't be something that would occupy an entire semester, but if you do it layer by layer I think it would be fun to do over several weeks. IrishMum
Mine start on a piece of paper and practice, then move to the canvas. I buy a few cheap canvases in our equivalent of a Dollar Store, so we can keep our favourites. Our garage is now a gallery.

Mandylubug
I'm still looking for book ideas, etc.. just thought I would share our "free painting" of today. My oldest really focused on his clouds earlier. Then he became tired. He still did great with his trees though. He was painting a "national park"... We did watch a little Bob Ross today on youtube. They thought he was awesome. Wish I could find something similar to that, even dvd format, etc... but tailored towards kids for painting. Walking-Iris
http://pinterest.com/walkingiris/artscrafts-for-the-kids/ Check out Pinterest for different ideas. Artistic Pursuits is an okay program --lots of watercoloring work. Oak Meadow's art supplies and books are good for art. http://www.incredibleart.org/lessons/lessons.html This is a great resource for free art lessons. And there's a ton of free lessons at Kinderart http://www.kinderart.com/sitemap.shtml You could take their easels outside. You could set up a still life for them to paint. You could have them do art copywork and try to copy a master.
TraceyS/FL
I got some stuff from Deep Space Sparkle, I got this one because I want to do the white house with my "obsessed by the White House but I have fine motor issues" 8yo (she did an awesome castle with that set!!) http://www.deepspace...for-grades-4-6/ BUT, then I was thinking how cool it would be to have them do the map one, and then using Mapping the World with Art have them at some point do real maps! I stocked up on some of the things that were recommended for an art cabinet - we seemed to only have "preschool" type of materials - and the kids and I are looking forward to a fun summer of art! I like the easels, at some point I will get there..... Tell your kids they did awesome!!!! :D

They aren't the best but they get the job done! Thanks for the info!
TraceyS/FL
Figures - right after I decide to "voice my customer service opinion with my $$ at Michael's"!!! oh well, I shall humor myself by reminding myself I don't have $18 extra this week! :D So what are their artwork plans next???
