Astronomy?

Recommended Posts

Any ideas on an astronomy course for a STEM kid? I am thinking either a semester or a year long course, but I would like to have it with some cds or dvds or other multimedia that we can use. Apologia looks maybe too young, but not sure about that either, because I haven't actually seen the book.

Thanks for your help!

We are using the TC lectures with Filippenko Understanding the Universe (96 lectures)

http://www.thegreatcourses.com/tgc/courses/course_detail.aspx?cid=1810

combined with the Chaisson text Astronomy Today

http://www.amazon.com/Astronomy-Today-Edition-Eric-Chaisson/dp/0321691431/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1363024876&sr=8-3&keywords=chaisson

for a full credit.

Older cheap editions of the text are available used.

I would also recommend this. Filippenko's course is wonderful. Ds also reads an astronomy article from Scientific American weekly, in addition to watching documentaries and reading "fun", astronomy/physics books of his choice. We also joined a local astronomy club. :)
