ByGrace3
You certainly can use OPGTR with AAS however, SWB recommends being halfway through OPGTR before starting spelling.
Murrayshire
We use BOTH....I didn't buy OPGTR before our K year...... we started OPGTR in the middle of grade K (5 years old) and got through lessons 104.....then for first grade we picked OPGTR up where we left off and began AAS1 at the same time.....just using OPGTR lessons 3 times a week and AAS1 5 days (unless he needed more from a step). It's January of 1st grade and we are on AAS 2 Step 12 along side with OPGTR in lesson 150......I'm glad I waited until 1st grade before introducing spelling.....my ds wouldn't have had the patience to sit through too much LA last year! We just started using the reading books from AAR that go along with AAS2.....just the books not the program. That's going pretty smoothly! I say just see how much your little one can handle........ Laura Cook
We use both! We start OPGTR in K. My oldest started AAS about 3/4 of the way through K. I didn't really pay attention to what lesson in OPGTR we were on! He was begging to do spelling so we went ahead. I think that AAS has really helped reinforce his reading so far. My middle child will start AAS around the same time as the oldest. I think they work very well together. We do spelling 4 days a week for about 15 -20 minutes. Lots of boys
We use both and love them. We started OPGTR in K and got about 1/2 way through by 1st. We started AAS in first and are moving slowly. We will finish AAS 1 and 2 by the end of 1st and all of OPGTR.
Lisa in the UP of MI
We use both. I actually do it the opposite of most people. We use word building & the first half or so of AAS level 1 to give the basics and then they jump into reading. Once they start reading we continue spelling and add OPGTR.
