Punchie
I picked one up today when we went to a local farm, but I have no clue what to do with it. Other than being told to throw it on the ground to smash it open, I am at a complete loss.
Amy in NH
You can also use an axe or hatchet to cut it, scrape out the seeds, roast the pieces until tender, and scoop out of the rind. Mash with butter, nutmeg, and either brown sugar or real maple syrup. Yum~!
CalicoKat
Put it in the oven for 30 minutes until the skin has cooked a bit. Then you can poke a sharp knife into it a couple times (like you do for potatoes). Then continue baking until the whole thing is soft. Cut it open, scoop out the seeds, and put the flesh in a bowl to be mashed. The flesh will scoop easily off the skin. Hubbards are my fav. squash. We call them dinosaur eggs. :D
Punchie
The thought of needing an axe or a hatchet to open a squash is a bit intimidating. :) I'm sure DH has one buried in the garage somewhere. If I were to put it in the oven, at what temp do I bake it? Do I bake it at that temp for the entire time, or do I adjust it once I've knifed the squash? How long does it normally take to bake? I know this last question is somewhat relative given the variance in size. The one I have is as big as my 1 yr old (if he were curled into a ball). KatieJ
I always bake all my squash whole. Its fabulously easy. Just don't forget to poke some holes in it. Exploding squash is not fun to clean up! If it is quite large it might take as much as an hour. Just poke it like you would a potatoe to check for doneness. enjoy!
