ProudGrandma
My boys would love a set of walkie talkies for Christmas, but I don't want to spend HUGE amounts of money...but I also don't want to waste money on junk. Can someone give me a good recommendation for me?
NotSoObvious
Costco! I can't remember which brand they were, I think Motorolla???, but we bought walkies at Costco a few years ago to use for a long move in two cars. They worked great. I think they were $50. amo_mea_filiis.
I din't know the brand, but my son had a pair that were great. They even worked well when the kids came to the fair. I could still hear them clearly from opposite ends of the fair grounds (which is huge). They were about $20 from walmart.

Brenda in FL
Look for two-way radios as opposed to walkie-talkie. That should eliminate the toys. I think we have a motorola set.
kitten18
My kids got these from Midland last year for Christmas. http://www.amazon.com/Midland-Consumer-Radio-LXT500VP3-22-Channel/dp/B007B5ZPGG/ref=dp_ob_title_ce They work well for us. I like that they have a base to sit in to charge. The reviews on Amazon aren't very good but for the most part it looks like people are expecting way too much for $30. i.love.lucy
I got ours on Amazon. They are also Motorolla, about $50. Not a toy. What I was looking for was <$50, durable, rechargeable batteries/pack, waterproof/water resistant (for camping or pool bag), bright color so less easy to lose. Found many to choose from on Amazon. They will have a range and most of them do great in wilderness/camping/park settings where there are no large buildings to obstruct. And mine do really great in my neighborhood with brick houses. We've never used them in the city though.

It says 24 miles..but I can hardly believe that is true for $30.

I think that would be maximum possible with no hills and no buildings. We have never used ours more than a mile away.
