richieheleng
Hi my daughter is learning to read and spell, but she has a very bad memory and is having a very difficult time remembering which combination of this vowels to use. Do you know of any tips or rule that can help her to remember? Thanks Helen
HiddenJewel
"oa" as /O/ is used in the middle of a word. "oe" as /O/ may be used at the end of a word.
eoffg1
Helen, the main spelling rule in English, is inconsistency. Where you could add 'ough' as well. Their are many words within English, that are termed as 'sight words'. Where they have to be recalled visually, as they could logically be spelled in various ways. Sharilynn29
"Oa" comes in the middle of the word. "Oe" and "ow" come at the end. So not a perfect science. One example is toe and tow. Most spelling programs teach these at some point.

It isn't as inconsistent as you may think. Sight words, to me, are ones whose spelling cannot be determined through phonics and there are very few words like that. Thanks, but how can I teach which one to use like if we are practicing spelling and I said write Boat, some tiimes she write bote, or I said stroke and she will write stroak. Is this just memorization or there is another rule that she can use.?Thanks Sometimes there are rules that will help you know when to use certain combinations but mostly it is just learning the spelling of each.
