bkpan
I know that many have read this and enjoyed it, but we are considering this for a multi-aged co-op. The introduction to the book mentions some pretty mature themes. Could someone who has read the entire unabridged version give me some input into the specifics of how graphic the novel is and how it presents these mature themes? Thank you! jhschool
I read this as a young teen. The only horrid part *graphically* was an execution scene. It is very brutal. I would say the other "mature" themes is the terrible betrayal by so many people against the poor sailor. His imprisonment and suffering are immense. His desire for revenge, over years and years, is enormous. There is no graphic stuff but there is suffering. As a young teen I loved how he learned in prison from the Abbe Fariah. At some point there is a trial where they have a flashback where a bad murder is committed. That's pretty bad. But I don't remember much graphic content. There was a lot of suffering, and people died of starvation, which is terrible. But the writing wasn't graphic.
