titianmom
What do you think? I'd like to do a Native American sociology course. Dumb idea? Any suggestions on making it meaty enough? Can you even do a sociology course with a focus on Native American cultures and get credit for it? I'm guessing if I just list it as a sociology course, no one would be the wiser on its focus. CupOCoffee
My 11 year old Dd is very interested in studying Native Americans. If you do a Google search, there are tons of sites out there with information. The information level ranges from the very simple to the very complicated. Here's something to get you started: http://curtis.library.northwestern.edu/ What we are doing is that in conjunction with doing SL's Intro to American History, as we go through each colony/state she will be learning about what Native American Tribes were in that area. I found a site that all you have to do is click on a map of US and it takes you to information on those tribes. Of course you would want more than just this for a high school level; I do think it's possible to do a serious study however, on what's available on line. Good luck! Candid
How meaty will be up to you and the resources you choose. I'm sure there are plenty of college level texts you could chose if you wanted. One place to start is the National Museum of the American Indian: http://nmai.si.edu/home/ They have an education website: http://www.smithsonianeducation.org/educators/resource_library/american_indian_resources.html I'd bet most state natural history or plain history departments and museums will also have some localized resources. Besides looking at the websites, check out the associated store's books, but don't hesitate to email or call and talk with someone. While you might hit a dead end, you might also find a tremendously helpful person who can guide you to good materials.
ktgrok
Sounds like anthropology to me...maybe "Anthropology of Native Cultures" would sound impressive?
