Rebecca
A couple of years ago- I thought there was a link- either here(on WTM) or on a local homeschool group for: a chart that stated the education needed for different careers and the average salary for that career. I cannot find this anywhere. Does anyone know of a resource like this? Thank you! Rebecca
Lori D.
I don't know if this is where the chart you are referring to is, BUT, the Bureau of Labor's Occupational Outlook Handbook online is a fabulous tool for career exploration. I have linked you to the home page. See the sub-heading that says "Select Occupations By" ? And there are 5 items under this sub-heading for you to choose a level for each: - median pay - number of new jobs (projected) - entry level education - growth rate (projected) - on-the-job training If you just click on "GO" without entering anything for any of those 5 items, you get the big mega-chart of all 538 occupations listed alphabetically, with what level each job has for each of those 5 items I listed above. If you want to narrow your list, then choose a level for some or all of those 5 items; so for example, for median pay, I selected "$75000+", and for entry level education I selected "Associates Degree" -- 3 jobs came up: - air traffic controller - construction manager - general and operations manager Alas, all 3 also show that the projected new jobs and projected growth rate are declining. So, even though they only require 2 years of community college and pay well, there aren't many of those positions out there, AND those positions are slowly going away... Have fun doing different searches, using different levels on just one, some or all five of the items. Then, once you find an interesting occupation, click on it and it links to a series of articles on that job with lots of detailed information. Such a helpful website for career exploration! It's just so massive, it's a little daunting when you first get onto it. BEST of luck! Warmly, Lori D. ETA -- For just a single chart, check out Schools.com, Find the Right Career (when you roll the cursor over a colored dot on the chart, it reveals the occupation). Edited August 14, 2012 by Lori D.
