Greek Mythology

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I'm planning a study on Greek mythology for my 5th grader DD. My primary resource will be D'Aulaires' Greek Myths. We will see what's at the library for additional reading. I was thinking we could make a map of ancient Greece and learn the Greek alphabet. I want to spend about 4 weeks on it.

Anyway, has anyone done a study on Greek Mythology? What did you do? What did you read?

I would add in the National Mythology Exam http://www.etclassics.org/pages/the-national-mythology-exam as it's primarily based on the material you'll be using. You can download a detailed bibliography of exactly what you need to study. We didn't feel the need for the teaching packets from them. Once you have the basics down, if she hasn't read it already, Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson series would be fun. You could compare them to the original stories. The website for teaching resources for the series is http://www.rickriordan.com/my-books/percy-jackson/resources/teachers-guide.aspx

Rosemary Sutcliffe wrote our favorite Homer retellings for that age.

Geraldine McCaughrean has a good Odysseus, Perseus, Hercules, Theseus, and more.

Memoria Press has a guide and flashcards to go with the D'Aulaire book.

http://www.mythman.com and http://www.wingedsandals.com may be useful for you.

Greek Alphabet Code Cracker from Classical Academic press is a fun, thin book on learning the Greek alphabet, and they provide free extras for it on their site.

We tried making a family tree. It gets a little confusing, especially since not all versions agree on parentage. But, we used an entire wall and had index cards in pockets with basic information on the gods/Demi-gods (Greek & roman names, symbols, what they were gods of, extra info). I'm sure some people could/would make it cute; ours was pure functional.

DS also tried to make a map of The Underworld. He actually did a pretty good job, in terms of getting all the areas mentioned in the version he was referring to, and the characters in the "proper" places. If you're already making a map of Greece, this would probably be overkill.
