sbgrace
The curriculum I'm using for the coming year has old history books as the primary texts. There are good things about this but I always feel the portrayal of Native Americans tends to be lopsided toward the negative things they did vs. what was done to them. Sometimes I feel there is a bent of portraying them as less intelligent or wise (for example easily tricked by, say, shiny trinkets) for lack of a better word too in these texts. How can I provide some balance? I plan to talk about it but we'll be reading the text and that might make a bigger impression here. My kids are 8 and too sensitive for anything overly disturbing. They read well so no editing on the fly anymore either.
Whereneverever
Where are you? Is there a reservation localish? I'd call them and ask for some resources on your local Native group.
