Basketmaker Amy
Hi, I am going with my DH to a conference in Las Vegas. He will be attending, I will be "spousing" it! Any good ideas of things to do/see while we are there? Things that I could do during the day while he is in the conference? Thanks for any ideas! tntgoodwin
If I were to ever get a chance to go to Vegas, I would want to see Penn and Teller. http://www.pennandteller.com/03/tickets.html I would also try to find a low stakes Texas Hold 'Em game. But that's just me.
iquilt
We were just there last weekend while dh worked. It depends on where you are staying, but if you get to stay on the strip you can walk just about anywhere in A/C. There are numerous spas, museums and other attractions. While we were there we saw the Blue Man Group at the Venetian, very cool. Also we drove over to the Mob Museum - newly opened in February of this year it is a very well done 3 story museum all about the history of the Mob and the Law Enforcement Agencies. The pool can be very nice (we had over 100 degrees our whole trip so the pool wasn't that refreshing). Have fun! Oh, we saw Penn and Teller on a previous trip and they are still my favorite show. Kathleen in LV
If you're by yourself during the day in Vegas, you really want to do things to keep cool - even though we're having a few days of cooler weather right now, you can expect it to be in the hundreds durning the day. (Yes, it's a dry heat, but it's still darn hot in the sun. - And that reminds me - make sure you bring plenty of lotion & lip balm. If you're not used to the dryness, it can do a number on you.) If you're a shopper, there are 3 great malls on the strip - at Caesar's, at Planet Hollywood, and down near TI is the Fashion Show mall. Even if you're not a shopper, hit the Canal Shops inside the Venetian. Inside you'll find a fun atmosphere with gondola rides & wandering entertainment. Without a doubt, hit the fountains at the Bellagio. I think they're better after dark, but they're amazing anytime. (And free.) Harrah's has an outdoor stage that offers free shows some afternoons if you just want to sit & chill. If you're bopping around the strip, there are a few free trams that will take you from one casino to another. (One goes between the Mirage & TI; another takes you between the Excaliber & Mandalay.) There's also a monorail that can take you up & down the strip for a fee. If you just want to take in the sights of the strip, there's a double-decker bus ride that allows you to sit on top. And there are many amazing shows. The Cirque shows are often favorites. I loved "O" at the Bellagio, and "Love" (the Beatles show) is pretty amazing too. I haven't heard such good things about the Elvis-themed show, but I never saw it. And if you have a car, Red Rock Canyon National Park is really amazing. It's located about 20 miles west of the strip. If you have any specific questions about Vegas or want more info, feel free to PM me. Have a great trip! Basketmaker Amy
Thanks for the suggestions and "insider" scoop! I live in Florida and am looking forward to "dry" heat vs. the humidity! I will pack extra lotion and lip balm.
amey311
I found a list of "Free things to do on the strip" when DH and I went last year. The fountains at the Bellagio are really cool, and there is a gorgeous conservatory inside the Bellagio. Many of the casino hotels have something inside as a draw ;) Don't be surprised if you spot tour groups moving thru some of them.
CourtneyBrooke
I did this twice. While my husband was in his conference, my daughter and I would walk the streets (she was 2-3). I also went back when my girls were an infant and 9 years old. I was armed with a list of things I wanted to see- the dolphin habitat, Siegfried and Roy's Secret Garden, the lion cubs, the Wax Museum, the M&M shop, etc. I also would just duck into every casino and walk through their various exhibits. One has gorgeous glass flowers covering the ceiling. One has a basement full of egyptian mummies and statues. I could go on and on. Do some google searching, and then just be prepared to do LOTS of walking, stopping in various places for some AC and drinks. LOVELOVELOVE Vegas. Oh, and if you're a Celine Dion fan, her show CANNOT be missed.
