reliable websites for symptoms/diagnoses of special needs?

Recommended Posts

So....if I suspect that two (or more) of my children have some issues such as SPD, Aspergers, or ADHD, where would I look online to find reliable, easy to understand info on this? Lists of symptoms/behaviors would be very helpful. My husband is convinced that they will just grow out of it, etc. I need to have my "evidence" to help him see that yes, I do need to present this info to the Dr. at the next appt. These kids need medical help, not just a few more years of all of us going crazy while I keep on waiting for that magic cure to happen...

For the record, my husband does think that there are children with these issues, and he is glad they can get help. He just thinks that his children are NOT in that category.

Help me help him see. Please.

:bigear: Anyone have any good sites on Sensory issues? I keep on finding ads for books etc., masquerading as helpful info...

Since you didn't get a reply on this, perhaps this might help. I own and am currently reading the book "Raising a Sensory Smart Child". You might find this link from one of the authors' site (Nancy Peske) helpful. It has some general info on SID.

I would recommend hitting the library for some books too.

For ADHD, check out Hallowell's books:

- Driven to Distraction and

- Delivered from Distraction

Others may have some other suggestions for you also. I picked Dr. Hallowell and Dr. Ratey's (co-author) books because they have ADD also, besides being in the field.

For ASD and Asperger's I would suggest taking a look at:

- Temple Grandin's book, The Way I See It

- The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome by Tony Attwood

For SID, check out:

- The Out-of-Sync Child

- Raising a Sensory Smart Child

I could list many more :D but these would be a good start.

I am currently reading (well... one of the books I am reading ;)) :

- Look at my eyes by Melanie Fowler

This is not a very popular book but I stumbled on it at my library while trying to find information on ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) and how to apply some of it at home, on my own if possible, and found it a nice little book for those that are new to the world of autism.

Anyway, thought I would suggest these for you to consider. You should be able to find most, if not all, at your library.

I would recommend hitting the library for some books too. ...

I find the "search inside" feature and reviews on Amazon very helpful also.

Some more books to check out are "The Mislabled Child" (for a general overview of several different learning disorders) http://www.amazon.com/The-Mislabeled-Child-Solutions-Challenges/dp/1401308996/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1338480694&sr=8-1#_

and "When the Brain Can't Hear" (for auditory processing disorders, which can mimic and/or co-exist with other learning disorders) http://www.amazon.com/When-Brain-Cant-Hear-Unraveling/dp/0743428641/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1338481205&sr=1-1

Thanks for all the suggestions, Marie. I have a couple libraries to pool from, so I hope to find some on your list.

Your books may be helpful to me AND to my husband, as I try to educate both of us...:)

You're welcome! I have been educating both of us for about a year now . If I could count how many times I have said "dear, you have to hear this" and then I proceed to read ;).

I find the "search inside" feature and reviews on Amazon very helpful also.

Absolutely :)! I always have one tab open with our library website and one or many more with books ;). I check out preview pages and read the reviews.
