purduemeche
We will be in northern Wisconsin for July 4th week - any good places we should visit? We are familiar with Door County, The Dells and Apostle Islands already. We are wrapping TOG Year 2, so could do some neat activities around fur trapping/settlements/pioneers. KatieJ
Can you drive on over to Mackinaw in Michigan. We did a really fun trip north after reading Paddle to the Sea. The lock and dam is there, log mill, forts etc. It all fit perfectly in with what we were studying at the time. I'ts been 10 years since that particular trip, so I don't recall more details. Lady Marmalade
How north will you be? Heritage Hill in Green Bay is pretty cool if you're going to be anywhere around there. The Neville Public Museum is also a nice museum, and for fun there is always Bay Beach Amusement Park with the Wildlife Sanctuary right across the street. The NEW Zoo is also a great place to visit. Oh, almost forgot the National Railroad Museum, which is way more interesting than I expected.
LostSurprise
What area? How far North? There's always the Laura Ingall's house in Pepin (central, western WI) or Old World Wisconsin (just what you're looking for but in southern WI). Wisconsin Historical Society http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/sitesmuseum.asp http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/teachers/ There are plenty of regional places, but a lot depends on where you're going. Search at the county level or the largest city in the area. Be advised that some local pioneer museums/festivals are closed around the fourth in favor of national celebration. Our local heritage group has a fur trading/blacksmithing/pioneer stuff in mid-June and then nothing until the Harvest festival in September. There's also a Houdini museum in Appleton and a freshwater fishing museum (with giant muskie) in Hayward.
