4th grade literature lists... anyone willing to share?

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to plan out my 4th grader's reading list for next year, and after consulting many other lists (including the Highlands Latin School, Sonlight Core 4, and VP), I have way too many books (not to mention the fact that I have temporarily-- I hope!-- misplaced said list)--

Anyone willing to share what their kiddos have tackled in 4th grade, or what you're hoping they will tackle in the near future?

My son starts 4th grade soon. This is the first year I asked him to help in the selection process. Basically I made a long list, I told him a bit about each book and he circled the books he thought he would like. We have:

The Whole History of Grandfather's Chair by Nathaniel Hawthorne

The Black Arrow by Robert Louis Stevenson

The Reb and Redcoats by Constance Savery

The WInged Watchman by Hilda van Stockum

The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy

The Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare

Faerie Gold by Kathryn Lindskoog

I am looking forward to hearing what others have chosen. I will probably need a few more.

along with their Core 4 History. I was going to go a different direction (i.e. starting in the middle per WTM suggestions), but we're expecting to switch over to private school in 1-2 years and I don't want dd to have to repeat the same reading lists or periods of history. I'm not going all the way with Sonlight, but this portion of curriculum seems to fit our needs perfectly for now. I think they have a really good reading list anyway.

FWIW, this is what we plan on.

Blessings,

Lucinda

We're doing a bunch related to theme units on American History, including:

Johnny Tremaine

The Witch of Blackbird Pond

Ben & Me

The Fighting Ground

We are also doing a unit on Shakespeare, which I wouldn't necessarily recommend at this age, but, if you haven't looked at it, take a look at "No Fear Shakespeare"--Shakespearean text on one side of the page, modern text on the other, the best way to get into it! Then we are also doing:

The Shakespeare Stealer, and others in that series.
