We have one of the Kingfisher reference books, but don't use it very often. (3x since the fall) We use lots of supplemental library books, ones in the SOTW AG and others too. Info books, picture books and chapter books.

 

 

So, imo, you don't need the reference books, though they certainly could be useful especially with older kids.

Not necessary, though my son loved it. I had to tape the spine back together (cheap binding on the regular hardback). My son didn't like it when I read it aloud, but he loved it when reading to himself, and he read the whole thing.

 

If you're getting library books, it's really not a must have though.
