tammyw
Reading the book a week thread reminded me that I really enjoyed both of these books last year. I'd love to find more like them. Any recommendations?

Any recommendations? A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is one of my favorites, too. :bigear:
JFSinIL
Maggie Now is by the same author! Not set in New York like Betty Smith's books, , but I like Pearl S. Buck's work, too. Also How Green Was My Valley by Richard Llewellyn (sp?) and The Flame Trees of Thika by Elspeth Huxley
plansrme
Did you read Maggie Now? Same author. It was possibly my favorite of the three. Terri
Poke Salad Annie
I loved all of those books, too! One of my favorites, which I rarely see mentioned on any lists, is The Lemon Jelly Cake, by Madeline Smith. I read it many years ago, but I remember it seemed similar to A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Oh, one more... Mrs. Mike, by Benedict Freedman. Edited February 12, 2012 by Poke Salad Annie

Thia
I've read "Tree" and "Joy" and they are among my favorite reads. I am off, immediately, to look into "Maggie"
