Night Elf
My dogs do not have any rough surface to naturally grind their nails. We don't take them out on walks but just let them run around our backyard. So my dachshund's nails are really long! I take him in to have them filed. I prefer to dremel over clipping. But his nails are still long. I remember my vet saying if I had it done more often, the quick would shorten and they could file them lower. But exactly how often should I have his nails done? BTW, I take him to Petco for grooming. I've tried to clip and even to file the nails on my own and I just cannot do it myself. It freaks me out. :)
RoughCollie
About once a week. Over time, the quick will shorten so the nails will be shorter. After that it depends on how fast the nails grow. Aidan's grow really fast, so he gets his nails dremeled weekly. He's never on concrete or other rough surfaces either. Night Elf
Oh, no wonder Marley's nails are so long! Every week? Egads! I've been doing it once a month. Oh goodness I feel horrible! I wish I could file them myself. Weekly is going to be expensive. *sigh*
