Blessed with seven
My daughters are at a point where they are needing a math calculator? My oldest, 17, went to take her practice GED test, did great except in math. She always got great grades in math but they told her she needed to use a math calculator and timed the math test. Well...she did not pass because she is not used to using a calculator. Can you all recommend one? Thanks! Kim
Punks in Ontario
We have a TI-83 plus and a cheaper scientific calculator. I prefer the TI-83. The keys are easy and the graphing is pretty easy to use as well.
Blessed with seven
odd question..how do you learn to use it, are there instructions? I would never know how to use one..ha! WOW! $100 for these? Do you need one that expensive? Edited December 12, 2011 by Blessed with seven
Jann in TX
For students up through Algebra 2 I recommend the TI-30Xiis make sure it is the "IIS" as it has 2 lines in the display. This calculator is easy to use-- and is a step down from a graphing calculator. The display will show the WHOLE problem as it is typed in and can be scrolled to see previous work. Unlike 'traditional' calculators this one has parenthesis for grouping and showing multiplication. There is a manual--but it really is not needed for basics. Cost is around $15 This calculator will take your students through the ACT/SAT and GED... -- If your student will be taking college level math then you might want to invest in a graphing calculator-- TI 83 or TI 84 suggested. For graphing calculators --if you student is not taking a class where the instructor shows 'how' to use one-- I recommend the DVD lessons at mathtutordvd.com Edited December 12, 2011 by Jann in TX

Dana
I agree with Jann. Also, the 30xIIs will let you transition very easily to the 84 if needed later.
Mouseketeer67
The official calculator used on the GED is the Casio fx-260 solar. It's really easy to learn to use and will cost you about $8 - $10.
