homemade whole wheat pita bread - success then failure

A few weeks ago, I made whole wheat pita bread for the first time using this recipe. I was so excited because they turned out really well. I used my bread machine and the biggest hassle was rolling out the dough. I've been looking around for a tortilla press, thinking that might make it easier.

 

Today, I tried again and failed. The pockets did not puff up. The last two puffed a little. I didn't do anything different, I don't think.

 

Suggestions?
