Math on the Level - what do you think?

Recommended Posts

This program looks great. I wonder if it works to have multiple ages all learning the same concepts together (to minimize work on Mom). I'm looking for something that my kids can either zip through or review at their own pace in an all-years-in-one type curriculum. I'd just worry it'd get overwhelming teaching them all different concepts and I would stop using it. It's a bit expensive for an experiment.

It also wasn't completely clear on how easy it is to figure out what needs to be understood before starting a concept. I noticed concepts from one book had to be known before learning a concept from another book, so it's not just in order for the book you're teaching from at the time. Does the Concept Chart explain the order of things across the different books?

From what I understand, it is a guide. It helps you explain the concepts (several different ways if needed) and make sure everything is covered -it will tell you after you learn "this" concept it is ok to drop review on "that one" because they reinforce each other. There is a guide in the back of the book to help you with what concepts should be taught when, but Carlita (the author) thinks of it like SWB thinks of the schedules in her book. :) Some parents wanted something to know which order they could go in. If you join the yahoo group for them there is alot of information available there. The link is on the Homepage.

As far as if you can use it with all your children together- most of it yes, you will just keep your olders with you as you delve more deeply into the topic and just introduce it to your little ones. Check out the samples and you will will see the where she says if you want to go deeper go "here".

HTH! :D

Yes. And it has a very complete list of all concepts a chld should know before reaching Algebra, with a checklist for you to check off as each child masters that concept. The concepts are roughly in order, and the idea also is that you only give your child 5 problems each day to review, rotating concepts. It is NOT a workbook, it does not have pages for your kids to work (it does give LOTS of problems in the back to be used for the daily 5 review). I was just curious if it was something that any of you had looked at. It is VERY expensive though!

I've been obsessively reading through everything on their site and I'm becoming convinced that this is the ideal way of teaching math. I was worried about the time investment on my part since I'll have 3 schooling and 4 under 4 in the Fall. The more I've considered how Math has actually been working out for us, the more it's obvious I put this much effort in anyway...but after the frustration has set in.

The semi-self-teaching texts we use don't give them compete understanding and I end up reteaching and reteaching to already frustrated children drudging through pages of practice. Or of course, keeping them focused on the pages of busywork for concepts they already know. AND, I won't be frustrated after all the work put in to solidify the concept in a child for it to be completely lost months later (or next year) when it's reviewed, as in other texts. Not to mention the gaps one of my children have that is a constant struggle and I haven't been able to identify them all. This program can identify them all, help me teach them for her understanding, and make review something automatic with the 5-a-Day problems.

This is completely tailored to the child from when it's introduced, to how it's taught, to how often the child needs review of it. I'm sold.:D

This is why it appeals to me - I use Singapore, and like how it teaches (though we also use Ray's for practice sometime), but you are right, I have to teach each concept, it's not like the books do that for me. I still have to sit down and spend a few minutes teaching the idea, then let them work . I guess it makes me nervous because I am NOT a math minded person, and the idea of striking out on my own like this is intimidating. I actually bought the program at our recent homeschool fair, and am just trying to get comfortable with it before my return policy deadline expires :) Because it is so expensive, I absolutely want to use it fully. And I like the 5-a-Day because it would reduce frustration around here I am sure! Thanks for your input!

My more advanced child (mathematically) is also using Singapore and we love it, but it often gives him more practice than he needs or far too little (where I'm reteaching and adding my own work).

For you not being math-minded, MotL sounds far better since it will give you multiple ways to approach each concept. (Right?) I've found with Singapore that I often have to figure out other ways on my own to explain the concept.

I am definitely purchasing this program when we get the funds.

Wow, I had never heard of this math curriculum. It looks really great!

If it wasn't so expensive I probably would have ordered it today :001_smile:

Would love to hear more feedback from homeschoolers who are using it!

I am curious to see how many of you have heard of this program. I saw it for the first time this May at our state convention. I like the concept (and love the tracking system/review plan) and wondered if anyone else has seen/used it. I am on the yahoo group, but wondered if anyone here had any opinions.

You might find this review helpful. It is written by a mom with multiple ages and varying degrees of ability. :)

Hello, I just thought i would chime in since I spent about 45 minutes having the couple who designed it explain it to me. It looks WONDERFUL (and I was only stopping at their booth because I needed them to stamp my card so I could enter a drawing for a door prize :) The lady who wrote it had 25 years of working with children with special needs and learning disabilities and also 14 yrs homeschooling her own children..As explained before it covers grades 1-8 and comes from a more hands-on/ applying approach to then expecing the child to cover it on paper. LOTS of experiential things offered. The checklist is AMAZING and very easy to implement and see where each child is and what concepts you have covered. They also have an organized way to make sure you are reviewing all the concepts regularly while still only requiring 5 problems per day...

The author is VERY nice and helpful - met the family at the convention where I bought this. It is rare for me to spend that kind of money - especially at a convention, but she does a wonderful job of explaining it and I am sold on the concept. It is the application that makes me a little nervous :) Thanks for your input, I guess I will probably end up keeping it. :)

The program seems to make so much sense when I read about it. I hesitate, partly because of the price, but also because between my 18 year old and 11 year old, I feel like I have tried so many programs that didn't really pan out... Currently it feels like our auditory learner has no math program that really fulfills her needs, so we end up patching things together. It is so tempting with MOTL! Is it the one we need from now until Algebra? I'd love to hear more from users. Prof B was my last attempt to engage her and I think I am almost ready to admit it isn't working for her, even though I like it! :-)
