joyfulhomeschooler
Looking for a good dictionary for my 3rd grader. I would like one he will be able to use for a while. I am trying to decide between this one http://www.amazon.com/Merriam-Websters-Intermediate-Dictionary-Merriam-Webster/dp/0877796793/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1318821274&sr=1-1#_ Or the elementary one. Does anyone have any experience with them and what age is/was your child that you used it with. Thanks!
Hedgehogs4
DO NOT get the elementary one! Nearly every word we have ever looked up in it WAS NOT IN THERE. I'm talking obvious, simple words. I would go with at least an intermediate or higher.
Sandy in Indy
I just bought this one for my 5th grader...and we're really happy with it. http://www.amazon.com/American-Heritage-Student-Dictionary/dp/0618701494/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1318823869&sr=8-
mandymom
On recommendation, I bought the Thorndike-Barnhart Student Dictionary (used) for my kids. We had several student dictionaries (elementary and middle school), and my 5th grader couldn't find many words he was trying to find. The Throndike-Barnhart is very thorough, and the definitions are very concise and understandable. I'm impressed with it. http://www.amazon.com/Thorndike-Barnhart-Student-Dictionary-Foresman/dp/0673124479

This is for a third grader who becomes panicky with too small of text.

That way I can look at it first and see if it fits our needs.

Does anyone have any experience with them and what age is/was your child that you used it with. Thanks! This one works for us. I have a couple bigger ones for when the word isn't in there. But most of the time he finds it. The type is a nice size and it doesn't intimidate him.
Stuart
We borrowed the intermediate from the library. It still doesn't have all the words we have needed. I bought the app for my iPod and use that when the word isn't in it. The app gives audio pronunciations which is great. The library has different publishers I am going to keep trying some of the suggestions from other posters.
