Phonics question- need ideas

I have an xtra student this year...she is a first grader coming from a ps kindergarden. We are using the OPGTR and ETC 1 as she is still sounding out cvc words. She has a good grasp of the initial sound and short vowels in words but consistently misses the ending sound. Any ideas or things that have worked for you? We are going through a lesson a day in the OPGTR and she is doing a front/back in ETC. She often is missing the page that ask them to x the same word. If given a word orally she will say the sounds but she will identify the initial sound as the ending sound.

It sounds like she needs to go back to more basic phonemic awareness activities first. Have her practice identifying just the first sound in words, then the last sound. Then have her practice pulling down a token for the number of sounds in a word--model for her her how many sounds by pulling a token towards you as you say each sound in a word, then have her try.

You can also make a game of it by hopping on squares for each sound (you can do frog & lily pads or whatever she might like to pretend). Have her say each sound with a hop--again, demonstrate for her how to do it. When she can orally segment well, then let her try in the ETC book again. You might do some of these exercises with her for awhile to help her get the hang of it.

Merry :-)
