jenlaw31
according to my states law: Curriculum instruction “includes, but is not limited to, the basic instructional areas of reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies, and in grades seven through twelve, composition and literature.†SC Law § 59-65-47 My dd is starting 7th grade this year, and I am confused as to what composition and literature specifically means  How does reading and literature differ, same goes for writing and composition ? To me they mean the same thing. Just curious what other middle/high school homeschoolers are doing for these areas ?

To me they mean the same thing. Just curious what other middle/high school homeschoolers are doing for these areas ? I used to teach 8th grade and here is what I learned in education classes (for all that is worth ;)). Reading is just that: reading. Literature encompasses the idea of reading many different genres such as poetry, plays, fiction, non-fiction, etc. Then learning about different literary terms in relation to that genre (protagonist, theme, alliteration, etc.) and how to break down a piece of literature into its meaning. Writing is just that: writing (copywork, handwriting). Composition means an original composition (short story, research report, etc.) and how one would go about writing one (paragraph structure, citations, dialogue, quotes, etc.)
jenlaw31
That makes sense now. Does anyone have any literature curriculum suggestions for 7th grade ? Middle School is a whole new world, I can only imagine what high school is going to be like
5LittleMonkeys
Lightning Literature Literary Lessons from Lord of the Rings Progeny Press Glencoe Literature For just literary terms and excerpts as samples you could look at Figuratively Speaking. If you search 7th grade literature on this board or on the logic stage board you should be able to come up with a lot more options.
