  1. Those do look good. I am putting them on my wishlist on PBS ;)
  2. I was going to recommend Saxon as well. I used that program with my dd for a few years before we switched to TT. It moves slow and is very repetitive. I used the TT discs with her last year in 5th, but for 6th we have been just using the workbook. It is going alot easier, believe it or not :tongue_smilie: The lectures on the discs confused her and I would have to keep coming over and helping her answering questions (kind of defeats the purpose of TT). It was just easier for me to teach her the lesson, then use the workbook for the problems.
  3. I have been printing off US maps for dd from this website. http://www.infoplease.com/statemaps.html
  4. That makes sense now. Does anyone have any literature curriculum suggestions for 7th grade ? Middle School is a whole new world, I can only imagine what high school is going to be like
  5. My daughter was having trouble reading also (if fact she still is a little behind). During her check ups she would have her eyesight checked (with the pictures) and she passed. Then as soon as they started using letters, she failed. She was refered to an eye dr and found out she is far sighted. She was given some glasses to use only for reading. They made a very big difference in her reading. We also use HOP. It is a love hate relationship. Sometimes we have to put it away for a little while and then try again. Both my dd's hated the tapes but really liked the books. In fact Detective Dog is my dd all time favorite book. I found if we do the Explode the Code workbooks along with HOP it is a nice combination. I credit those 2 programs with getting my children to read. There are 5 levels to HOP, it sounds like you just did level 1. Level 2 is where they start blending begining sounds. I also got a great program that helped my dd with blending. She was having a really hard time with that concept. It is called The Phonics Game and is a game played with cards that reinforces phonics rules. The kids try to see how many cards they can collect to see who wins. He probley just needs some time to mature. Kids seems to like to decide one day they are finally ready to read and take off with it. Atleast that is what my kids did ;)
  6. We started back 3 weeks ago. We have decided this year to start year round schooling. The kids grumbled about it for a little while, but are getting used to it now. I am thinking they are going to like it a whole lot better once they have their first week off, while all the other kids are starting back to school. In order to fill the 180 required days for my state, it comes out to 15 days a month for 12 months. So they should have plenty of time off during the month throughout the year, instead of 1 long summer break. We'll see how it goes :tongue_smilie:
  7. according to my states law: Curriculum instruction “includes, but is not limited to, the basic instructional areas of reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies, and in grades seven through twelve, composition and literature.†SC Law § 59-65-47 My dd is starting 7th grade this year, and I am confused as to what composition and literature specifically means  How does reading and literature differ, same goes for writing and composition ? To me they mean the same thing. Just curious what other middle/high school homeschoolers are doing for these areas ?
  8. My 7 yr old still does it every once in a while. I don't think that is right either to mark it wrong.
  9. We use Easy Grammar and it works out well. The lessons are short and there are no frills.
  10. There is more drama in high school sports than there is on General Hospital. My dd softball team is ridiculous.
  11. My dd is a huge star wars fan also. Last year for her bday I baked a sheet cake and stuck some star wars galactic heros figures on it. There are some star wars themed board games that might be fun.
  12. Is your dh totally against a vasectomy ?? That is the route we are going. We have 4 kids and we are DONE !! I also suffer with really bad PPD, I don't want to go through it again. Until we are able to save the $$ up for the "procedure" I am on BC pills. The side effects of Mirena scared me too much.
  13. It looks pretty, but in my experience, doesn't taste as good as regular frosting. It has kind of a weird consistancy. Maybe that is what she was talking about.
  14. I am assuming HEM is home educators magazine ?? Is there a good place to buy it, and how much is a subscription ? I was just thinking about this today, that I need a good homeschool magazine.
  15. Yoga and dancing sound cool. Are those dvd's or live stream ?
  16. I found some great boxes at Family Dollar a few weeks ago. They are plastic magazine bins in all different colors, they were $2/ea. They don't seem to take up nearly as much room as the other bins, because they are tall and skinny.
  17. Have you looked at Real Science 4 Kids Chemistry level 1 or 2 ?
  18. There are so many titles it gets a little overwhelming. We have streaming on the Wii. What are some good educational shows you watch on there ?
  19. Misty of Chincoteague. I didn't even know they made a movie till I found it at a yard sale.
  20. I was wondering about that too. Wow an hour is not much time to prepare for such a devestating event.
  21. I use Dave Ramsey Financial Peace Junior for my kids. It is amazing how well it works. They have chores and get paid allowance. Then they have to divide it up into 3 envelopes. One for tithe, spending $, and savings. The neat thing about the savings is they have a chart that they write what they want to buy with it. It is usually something big that will take them a few weeks to save up for. They decide how much they want to put away each week for that item and estimate how long before they should have enough to get it. A regular chore chart didn't work for us, but this system does. It has been a few months and the kids are still going strong. I don't have to remind them about their chores, they do them automatically and check off the list themselves. I do however include things like making bed, and cleaning room in their $$.
  22. I would. With gas prices soaring, it will be nice to have the extra cash each month.
