Moxie
How did their connection get started? What was the first company that offered health insurance as a benefit? Why health insurance; why not home owners insurance, car insurance, etc? Do you think, if employers had NEVER been involved in health insurance and everyone had always had to buy their own insurance or medical care, that we would be in a better or worse place as a country right now? Julie in Austin
I read somewhere that the practice started in WWII, when wage controls meant that companies couldn't pay workers more cash, so they gave them health insurance instead. FWIW, I think it is a ridiculous system.
RahRah
Health insurance has existed since the late 1800's, but wartime (1939-1945) wage freezes imposed by the government accelerated the spread of group health insurance via employers because they were unable (by law) to attract workers by paying higher wages, so employers created benefit packages that included health insurance, paid time off, etc. as a way to attract and keep workers.
