6th Grade Reading List

Since you are new to the boards, I went back and read all your posts so that I could see if you mentioned what curricula you were using. I know that certain curricula will actually have reading lists. The Well Trained Mind has reading lists in it as well.

My kids are going to be 2nd and 3rd graders, so I don't have a specific list to share with you, but here are a few things I would take into consideration:

1. How well does your daughter read, and how much does she like to read?

2. Do you want to correlate reading to another subject like history or science?

3. What are your goals in choosing her reading assignments?

The beauty of homeschooling is that there is no prescribed reading list that all kids have to follow. You get to decide what is important for your daughter to read. If there are reading skills like comprehension, fluency, or inference that you would like to work on, there are workbooks that deal with those, or you can make up your own system.

If you're not sure where to even begin, check out the section in The Well Trained Mind about Logic Stage Reading. It may help you determine what you need to do. Discuss with your daughter some of the things she's already read and find out what she likes to read and how much she extracts from her reading. If you have the time, read a book together with her and see how she processes it. For more ideas, you may want to check with a children's librarian at your local library. I have found our librarians very helpful in recommending reading material.

My daughter is going into sixth grade and the "required" books she will be reading (assigned by Oak Meadow) are:

The Adventures of Robin Hood

D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths

Rainbow People

Growing Up In Aztec Times

King Arthur

The Ramayana

We are also continuing to work our way through Story of the World Volume 1 and we read most of the suggested/supplemental reading for that.

We're doing a 52 Books In 52 Weeks Challenge together, so each week we pick a fun read aloud that we're both interested in and read it together.

Other than that, she chooses her own reading for fun.

Our list was based largely on the fact that we were studying medieval history that year (as one would if following the WTM history progression)... Some of the titles are from History Odyssey level 2 (middle school) Middle Ages, some are from Lightning Lit 7, and others we simply added in (mostly historical fiction related to the period we were studying).

Here's what ds read for school in 6th:
