AliciainNC
I am thinking of just using vocabulary, but my ds spells ok. If he miss spells a word it it usually off by one letter. I can't decide if I should use both. Do you use both for you fifth grader? I use SWO for spelling.
Brindee
For 5th grade I only did spelling for dd. My boys were doing Latin in 5th, so I considered that their vocab., and just did spelling otherwise.
Tammyla
We stop spelling and move onto vocabulary when spelling instruction is no longer needed. (This is usually between 4th-7th grade.) You can go with your instincts & factor in his reading ability and level too.
Michele R.
My husband does spelling with our three before he goes to work everyday! He kind of makes it into a game by calling out spelling words to them (from Spelling Power) and creating a humorous story with those words. If he can't come up with a funny story, he at least makes up silly sentences with the words. It gives my three children another teacher besides Mom, gets them relaxed about spelling and loosened up for the day, and I'm able to get laundry going, etc. while he's teaching. His pay is a homemade lunch! Just in case some of you are wondering about morning devotionals, we have a Family Worship time at night and do Bible study in the morning after Spelling. -Michele R., homeschooler for 8 wonderful, crazy years! Linda...inOwasso
Check out Megawords by EPS. It's an excellent, easy to use, workbook that combines reading/vocab/spelling.
