Help - decorating for at-home VBS

Recommended Posts

crepe paper in shades of green hanging down from the ceilings, different lengths with some floor to ceiling (in areas where they won't get torn down)

a 'base camp' area with a free standing tent and a fake campfire (logs, lights, red and orange plastic or tissue)

jungle sounds cd

a rope bridge down a hallway (paper slats along the ground and rope handrails) with leaves and birds on the walls

borrow fake and real potted plants, palms etc. from friends (a nursery might be willing to loan some for free)

a florist might also be willing to donate a bunch of leafy 'filler' stuff that you could tuck around

for the entrance make a 'curtain' of leaves that would need to be parted to enter...attach paper or fabric leaves and flowers onto elastic, fasten the elastic securely (but not stretched) to the top and bottom of the the door way (could staple each end to a board and attach one board above the door way and the other across the bottom of the doorway)

see if a pet store or animal rescue would let you foster some snakes, frogs etc and have the tanks available for viewing (if you have the know-how and can keep the tanks secure)

have fun decorating!

Hi all - we do VBS at home every summery. This year's theme is JUNGLE and we are starting to brainstorm inexpensive ways to turn our home into a rain forest.

Any suggestions?

Lots of lots of leafy plants and various shades of green.

If you live where palm trees grow, the palm frawns occassionally need to be trimmed back. You might find a neighbor or gardener who will give the trimming to you for free.

If you have ever wanted to get a pet parrot, now's your chance!

Stuffed animals like birds, moneys and jaguars, etc. Old used beany babies are available for really cheap.

Hang some bananas somewhere in the house--then pick them off the "trees" for a snack.

Buy a pineapple, and as it ripens it will give off a tropical smell. Serve it for a snack or with a meal on the last day.

Jasmine tea. Even if your children don't want to drink it, you can make it just so you can have the wonderful fragrance of jasmine pervade your home. Mango tea would work too--and it tastes great iced!

Room freshner with a tropical scent.

When we decorate for VBS at church we get the really cheap plastic table cloths that they have at party supply stores for .99 and cover the walls with them. My room was red last year and it looked so awesome. It is a cheap way to make the kids feel like they are in a totally different place. We also go to the Goodwill and get cheap themed things to set around. You could get plants and a ton of stuffed animals there.
