Has anybody done Language Therapy?

Recommended Posts

I can find a lot of information about Speech Therapy online, but Language Therapy is a bit different.

What types of problems does it address? Do you think it a worthwhile therapy to look into? Any other information you can throw at me?

My DD doesn't have speech articulation issues, but does have problems with word finding, syntax, etc.

I know two SLP (Speech-Language Pathologists) and they both work with people with articulation and language issues. One of the two, I use for my ds's articulation issues but she is very experienced with language issues, too.

SLPs will work with pragmatic language (day to day practical language), along with idioms, vocabulary, sentence development, etc.

We did language therapy for my 10yr old Aspie with pragmatics and word-finding issues. She also has figure-ground auditory processing disorder and was having therapy for that at the same clinic around the same time.

We did not see any improvements in either areas.. We eventually stopped going to language therapy. The SLP and I talked and we decided that she would benefit most from a social skills group since most of her issues are anxiety-based (she was bordering on selective mutism).

She did 8 weeks of auditory therapy.. They retested her at the end of the 8 weeks.. they said there was no change and she even got worse in one ear.. So neither therapy did much for us.

Language therapy is just that ...improvement of language. My son ( almost 7) does not ahve articulation problems but delay in language. We recently started using Climbing to Good English 2 & Pathway Readers ( with the workbooks ) , Rod &Staff reading 2 and I noticed a huge improvement in his language, syntax and grammar in general. I highly rec. these program as well as daily reading and questioning from great literature. The questions should be : Who , What , When , Where , Why ...

My children have language issues and have used language therapy. The SLP does it. I have also had a learning specialist do it. There is a company called Liguisystem that has several workbooks you could do on your own if you know the particular areas that need to be worked on. I had to cut out the SLP so I will be using these workbooks.
