Jean in Newcastle
We went on a field trip to the nature center today. We went on a 2 hour nature walk/picnic in a wetlands area. We saw this tall shrub or small tree with oval leaves with a red berry in the center of the leaf. As far as we could tell, the berry was not on a stem but actually grew out of the center of the leaf. The park ranger could not identify it when we described it and I've looked online and in 6 different field guides with no luck. We live in Washington state. Can anyone help? The Girls' Mom
Was it a gall? If you google 'leaf gall' and look through the images, you may find one like it... ETA: if it IS, you can often cut them open and find insect larvae.
Jean in Newcastle
I think that's it! I found a picture that looks exactly like what we saw. No wonder I couldn't find it in a plant field guide. Thank you.:) Edited June 7, 2011 by Jean in Newcastle typo
The Girls' Mom
You are welcome! I wouldn't have thought of it if I hadn't enjoyed a wildflower bike tour recently and the guide talked about them. :D
