Carrie12345
My 12.5yo is a decent writer for his age, with a strong vocabulary and nearly flawless grammar skills. Style-wise, I feel he's pretty typical of a 12.5yo boy ;). He likes MCT because it's pretty clear cut, but we're having a heck of a time when it comes to getting him to make a thesis statement. If I *give* him one, he can do an okay job with it, but I haven't been able to come up with a way to explain what a thesis is and how to develop one. In most situations, I can find key words and ideas that will bypass "normal" thinking and hit the logical part of his brain so he has enough to work with. It just isn't gelling on this topic though, and he's getting extremely frustrated. I'm actually considering skipping the whole thesis aspect to focus on the rest of the skills, but it's definitely something I want to refer back to now and then, at the very least. Any ideas? AngieW in Texas
Windows to the World (IEW) was very good for this for my Aspie. It gives a formula to follow for creating a thesis and that's what my dd needed.
elise1mds
I've had great luck calling it a 'topic sentence' and/or 'topic paragraph.' I explain that it has to cover several aspects - in a general manner - of what the paper is going to be about and address several of the key questions (the 5 W's and an H) to be answered in the paper. Feel free to take all this with a grain of salt, though, since my kiddo is SO much younger.
