fairfarmhand
I have promised myself if milk prices get up to $4 a gallon that I will buy a dairy cow. Tell me what I need to know. (we already run beef cattle, so the cow world is not new to us.)
kiana
I highly recommend 'the family cow' by dirk van loon. It's not that expensive on amazon and has far more than you could get on an internet site. We read it before we bought any. Also, milking is a lot harder than it seems like. Make sure you get a nice gentle old bossy with big ****. Whatever you do, don't get a first-calf heifer :P
WistfulRidge
I highly recommend the Keeping a Family Cow boards and this book.
Aggie
Have you considered a dairy goat? We have Nigerian Dwarfs and a Nubian. They are all gentle, easy to handle, and give plenty of milk! We have enough milk for our family, but not an over-abundance. If they need vet attention, we can load them up and take them. FWIW, we have cattle, too. The goats are so much easier!:001_smile:
