Can I Combine Science for a 3rd and 6th grader?

Sure you can ~ I've done it (am doing it, as a matter of fact). I know my kids ages don't reflect that wide of a gap, but it's there because ds12 has special needs and functions on a much "lower" level than your typical 12 year old boy. When he and his sister 'work together', it's more like a 14 year old and a 7 year old.

We're going through the Flying Creatures book at the moment - dd14 and I both help ds12 to understand the material (there are some things we skip with him, some things we change up, and some we just use as is) and then I add things to it for her sometimes, as she's older. (She and I are watching through David Attenborough's "The Life of Birds" documentary, for instance.)

Granted, we don't "do the book" as is.. we change a lot. We don't do the 'notebooking' thing - we'll take pictures of projects and such, but we don't follow the "in your notebook, describe what you have learned" stuff. We do our own projects if we don't like the one suggested. We add videos, songs, research stuff on other websites. We use the book more as a 'guide' to the topic.... our comfort with that level of 'we do what we want' probably also makes it easier to work with the gap.

Anyway - I'm just trying to say that yes, you can do that. I've just gone and said it the long way. :p

Of course you can. Some programs are easier to combine grades/levels than others but it can be done with most curriculum.

Considering God's Creation can be used for both grades you mentioned. It is not a complete program IMO but you could then add an Apologia text and some living books to make it meatier. Throw in some writing/research assignments, drawing, worksheets (if you use them), along with some experiments and you have a science program.
