MyThreeSons
Has anyone used Building Great Sentences: Exploring the Writer's Craft from Great Courses? I'm seriously considering getting this for my ds.
8filltheheart
This course approaches writing from a writer's perspective vs. "instructional writing course." My dd did not like the course at all while her younger brother loved it. Ds is very analytical and has been inspired by Tolkien to form a love of linguistics. He is attempting to write his own novel. FWIW, the course did help change his writing style somewhat. At first it was funny b/c he started constructing REALLLLLLLLLLLY long sentences. But after a few weeks, he tempered them himself. I think it is going to depend on what you are looking for if you would find it useful or not. (BTW, the ds that liked the course is a math/science guy. My dd that didn't like the course loves literature.)
freerange
The course looks really interesting! For what age range do you think this is suitable?
MyThreeSons
hmmm... my ds is an aspiring journalist. He is fascinated with words and their origin, and loves a well-crafted sentence. We do not like what we have seen of IEW -- the formulaic style turns us off.
