HeatherM
I would like to do a classical music appreciation study with my kids. I am picturing something very simple. Kind of like this: We listen to a song on a CD, then read a bit about the song and the artist. Are there any CD/ book sets out there that are as simple as this? Thank you, HeatherM
Veritaserum
Hmm.... You might like The Story of Classical Music.
Cleopatra
We use the free pages from here ....... http://practicalpages.wordpress.com/free-pages/free-famous-musicians-wall-chart/ Each month we study a different composer. I post him on our bulletin board, my dd researches and writes his biography and I have her listen to at least 4 pieces during the month (I just get CDs from the library). After each time she listens to a song, she records it on a Classical Listening Music Guide sheet (I have a .pdf, if anyone wants it). I like this because in addition to information on the piece, she has to record what the piece reminded her of/how it made her feel, etc. I find she listens more closely doing it this way. I also supplement with books. Mike Venezia's books are fun and the Opal Wheeler books are very engaging. It's working well so far. It isn't too much that's it's too overwhelming to do, but enough that she remembers the composers and their music.

Amie
Here is a look at the Opal Wheeler biographies with companions. If you don't own any cd's of the composers, you can often find some at the library (or cheat a little like I do and look up clips of famous works on youtube). :001_smile: http://thecurriculumchoice.com/2009/09/opal-wheeler-composer-biographies-companion-discs/ I've also heard great things about Themes to Remember, but I don't have that (yet). 4Hisglory
We just found out about these books last week and were able to find them at our library. They are by Anna Celenza and are a picture book/Cd combo. http://www.amazon.com/Gershwins-Rhapsody-Blue-W-CD/dp/1570915563 We have also used Music and Moments with the Masters by David Quine along with The Gift of Music by Jane Stuart Smith andBetty Carlson. helena
We listen to these: http://www.amazon.com/Story-Bach-Johann-Sebastian/dp/B000001KCL/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1297583736&sr=1-1. You can hear samples of the narrator on Amazon. We listen to the cd, which includes bio and music, then we read simple books on each composer.
