razorbackmama
I FINALLY may have found some sort of "all-encompassing" assessment place. However, one thing that gives me pause is that when I mentioned something about an audiologist diagnosing CAPD, she sort of blew that off and said that they have a test that would find it. Now, perhaps I'm misunderstanding and she's meaning that their testing would show some sort of auditory processing disorder, but I don't know. I was under the impression that ONLY an audiologist can formally diagnose CAPD? Should I steer clear of this place? Or might I go get the assessment done (it's $350-450 per child) and then have a formal diagnosis done with an audiologist, if the assessment does show a problem? LizzyBee
Other specialists can screen for APD, but only a specially-trained audiologist can diagnose it. Some of the tests are done in a sound proof booth using high tech equipment. Honestly, I don't even trust other specialists to screen for APD. I had one speech therapist tell me that she didn't see any signs of APD in my dd even though 2 months earlier, my dd couldn't pass any part of the APD evaluation. If your child has symptoms of APD, just make the appt with the audiologist and don't worry about what the other tester thinks.
Leonor
I agree with LizzyBee. Please do not waste your time having someone other than a specialized audiologist test for capd. Not even all audiologists will test correctly. The testing must be done in a sound booth. Look up "When The Brain Can't Hear". This is an excellent book. Some neurodevelopmental therapists recommend a type of therapy that is actually controversial and not appropriate for certain types of auditory issues. For example, occluding the left ear. The way to remediate depends on the type. This cannot be detected just from a screening. If you have not, I would have dc evaluated with an audiologist that specializes in auditory processing and follows the Bellis/Ferre model. http://www.asha.org/public/hearing/d...-apd-child.htm http://www.ocslha.com/Ferre.htm http://ioniaisd.pbworks.com/f/Centra...Strategies.pdf
razorbackmama
Thanks - that's what I suspected. The testing this place does cover all sorts of things in addition to auditory processing (sensory integration, dyslexia, etc.), so I wasn't looking to go there specifically for CAPD. I'm not exactly sure WHICH direction to go in (which is why I've felt I've been spinning my wheels for the past several years!). Maybe this place could steer me in some sort of direction????
