looking for college major and career ideas

Recommended Posts

This is for my 15yo. She is very interested in psychology right now and has been reading Psychology Today for the past two years. She did the Teaching Company Philosophy of Mind course this past spring and loved it. She is very interested in how the mind works (the mind, not the brain).

Issues:

She has Asperger's and still has some fine motor delays that aren't ever going to go away. She can work buttons, snaps, and zippers, but has extreme difficulty with buttons. She has never been able to tie a bow.

She is interested in possibly getting a BS in Psychology and then following up with an MS in either Occupational Therapy or Educational Psychology. These are just possible ideas she's had for what might be a good fit for her. She thinks that she would enjoy working one-on-one with kids. She is generally very good with young kids.

She is not sure if she'd be able to handle being with people all day though. She would have to be able to have some downtime.

Can you think of other possible majors or careers she should look at? She is strong in math and science. She can't handle any type of job where she'd be under a lot of pressure (especially time pressure). She also needs a work environment that's pretty calm rather than chaotic.

Maybe something in Cognitive Research? A research position would allow her to practice in the field she finds interesting, interact with people thru studies, but give her plenty of "alone time."

Maybe she could shadow someone to see if what they do is interesting.

Would she do well with handling lots of data and organizing it?
